Healthy Youth > Girls on the Move

“I learned to trust myself and to be confident in myself.”
- 12-year-old participant, ACE Charter School
Girls on the Move is designed to create a safe space for girls to explore their talents, peer relationships, and physical abilities while teaching sport specific skills to enable girls to be physically active and live a healthy lifestyle.
Girls on the Move was created exclusively for middle school girls, to encourage, empower and energize them to take control of their individual health! For 1.5 hours girls are engaged in activities to build self-esteem and confidence through discussions, games and sports. Themes such as honoring diversity, respecting peers, celebrating individuality and mind, body and spirit are explored through the program. Girls are free to be themselves and get to experience a variety of sports such as basketball, soccer, tennis and dance!
The goal of the Girls on the Move program is to create healthy behavior change directly impacting girls’ self-esteem, resiliency, as well as diabetes and obesity epidemic. It is crucial that pre-teen girls have healthy role models; research has shown that through physical activity girls can improve their self-esteem, confidence and body image. Girls who have an improved self worth are also less likely to participate in risky behaviors such as drug use and unsafe sexual activities.
Girls on the Move can be incorporated into just about any existing program such as after-school, in-school elective, and summer camps.
