Saying Goodbye
I've had a lot of nicknames over my lifetime. One of my favorites was coined by a dear friend and former board member when she called me "McWeepy." She and many others know that I wear my emotions on my sleeve. In other words, I laugh loudly and cry easily. It is a job requirement when you run a non-profit for 10 years. Well I must confess that McWeepy came out in full force after our Board of Directors meeting...
...at 7:38 p.m. On May 2, 2013 , the board voted 6-0 to close down Generations Community Wellness effective June 30, 2013.
As I drove home from the meeting, I was overwhelmed with a flood of memories, clients' faces, employees' hugs, children's laughter, older adults' thankfulness, parents' joy, friends and family's support, and my wife's love. All I could do is thank and praise God for the incredible opportunity given to me 11 years ago when the Lord placed the Generations vision in my heart.
Why so many memories?
In 10 years, Generations has impacted the lives of over 630,000 kids, adults, and seniors though our programs and policy work. We have been blessed to work with over 200 partner agencies across multiple sectors including government/municipalities, faith-based, health clinics/hospitals, school districts, childcare, community centers, fortune 500 companies, hospitals, after-school programs, foundations, and multiple community benefit organizations.
So why are we closing?
About a year ago I heard another one of those whispers in my heart, "well done." I discussed it with Annette (my wife) and we both confirmed the whisper was right - time to close up shop. So what did I do next? I ignored the whisper and pressed forward with "business as usual." So what did God do? He kept moving forward with the plan in spite of me. About 3 months ago, it was just way too obvious that the nonprofit was sunsetting. I was reminded of a verse in my bible that reads, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
SO GRATEFUL
If you are receiving this message, that means that you connected, in some way, with Generations over the years - and I am eternally grateful. Without you, we could not have experienced the amazing impact on the community.
Specifically I want to thank my wife, my family, friends, all of the employees, volunteers, partners, donors, and clients. You all truly enhanced the quality of life for people of all generations.
One more time
I can't begin to explain how humbling it has been to ask for financial support over the years. The good news is that each and every time I asked, I knew that the donations would be well spent on equipping individuals and communities to advance their health through physical activity and nutrition programs and policies.
This time my request is different. Our goal as we sunset the nonprofit is simply to finish well. Over the next 8 weeks, we will be shutting down operations. As you might gather, there is an expense associated with closing down a 10-year-old business. So I am asking for one more tax-deductible donation to this "amazing nonprofit that did what it was supposed to do." We are seeking $10,000. To donate click here.
Thank you to the many friends, family members and partners that have already contributed to our "finish well" campaign.
What's Next?
